if you follow me, you know I believe that women over 40, 50 and beyond should wear what they want to wear. The key is do you feel confident in it? That is really what matters! So, I am sharing how to wear denim shorts for you in case you are interested in a pair this year.
How to Wear Denim Shorts
I kind of laugh when I see these titles. How else would you wear them, make sure they are on your lower half and not inside out!
Kidding, kidding. I’m giving you some tips on picking the right pair for you:-)
Does Inseam Matter?
Well, if you are looking to feel your best and most confident, I do find that midlength or 5-7″ inseam shorts are flattering. Hoochie – remember that term? No one wants to stick out for all the wrong reasons, so I recommend that the length that is flattering and comfortable on you, may not work for other ladies.
If you have a long torso, like I do, I prefer a high-rise denim short with length to my fingertips. Some ladies prefer a longer inseam yet, and choose to wear Bermuda shorts. Height plays a factor with wearing Bermuda shorts as often, they would “cut off” a body that is shorter and appear frumpier. An A-line denim short or short that is fitted at the waist and flares out a bit at the hem, is deemed welcome by many ladies.
Shorts have to make me feel confident. If I don’t or don’t like the higher inseam, then I will not wear them. Wearing a garment, should make a lady feel good, dressed well, and herself. Having even one percent of stretch makes for a more comfortable fit, as I find denim with 100% cotton will shrink in the dryer and may also “bag out” after repeated wear. No one wants the saggy bottom look either!
If you decide to stick with wearing denim shorts, find ones that appeal to you in style and length, and wear them in confidence!
I often like a small heel or wedge with shorts, even sneakers have platforms these days, just adding a bit of length to your leg as well.
How I Styled This Pair of White Jean Shorts
I am not looking to show my bootay or have shorts that are ill-fitting. These jean shorts make the grade, as they are high waisted and have about a 5 inch inseam. Find the pair that works for you and then decided how you might dress them up or wear them more casually.
This pair, from Old Navy, is under $20, has a small amount of stretch and is soft. I look at these as wearable with nearly everything. When it gets hot here in Charlotte, we are looking toward linen and staple pieces that will work with our spring and summer wardrobe.
Wearing the Old Navy denim shorts, I paired it with a linen vest which is adjustable in the back Not always easy to find, I love that detail, as it makes it a more fitted garment, if I choose. Vests are on trend now, and have been for several years, I wore it here without a shirt, but you could easy wear it with a button down, or off the shoulder for some more fun. I do appreciate a structured look and would probably go with the addition of a white linen blazer, like a 3 piece suit set with shorts. Mu gold Franco Sarto espadrilles have been in my closet for at least 6 years and I continue to wear them each summer I kept the jewelry simple with baroque pearl Monica Vinader earrings and necklace. These are really a favorite.
This outfit is older, and the shorts the same length, but I didn’t keep them as I wasn’t crazy about the all cotton. The new pair have some stretch to them, and the hem is sewn in, so you don’t have to roll them, which I like.
